Hyaluronic Acid Based Fillers
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the dermis (the lower layer of the skin). It has strong water binding capacity, imparting the skin with volume and suppleness.
Hyaluronic acid is abundantly present in youthful dermis. However, with age the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the dermis decreases dramatically.
How is Hyaluronic Acid used?
RestylaneTM and HylaformTM are two new injectable filler substances available for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, furrows, and folds. The treatment is performed by injecting the filler into the skin or lip, and because no pre-test is needed it takes less than 30 minutes. These hyaluronic acid based fillers may last longer than the collagen based fillers. RestylaneTM is a gel of hyaluronic acid generated by a Streptococcus species of bacteria, whereas HylaformTM is derived from avian combs.
