BOTOX®
What is BOTOX®
BOTOX® is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The effects of the BOTOX® protein have been known since the turn of the century, but not until 1980 was the protein found to be therapeutically valuable for a number of muscular disorders. Now BOTOX® can even be used to eliminate facial wrinkles by relaxing the specific facial muscles that create them. In the past few years it also has been used to treat the embarrassing condition of excess sweating of the palms, soles, underarms, face and other parts of the body. BOTOX® can also be used to prevent occurrence of migraine headaches. If you suffer from any one of the medical problems, please ask the doctor how BOTOX® can help eleviate them.
What are the Indications?
When we frown for any reason, we produce folds between our eyebrows called Frown Lines. For some of us, this causes a chronic furrow that produces a frustrated, discouraged, angry look on our face which can be
embarrassing to us and distracting to others. BOTOX® is also effective in treating Forehead Lines, Gummy Smile, Nasal Flaring, Marionette Lines, Lip Lines, Chin Wrinkling, Neck Folds, Upper Chest Wrinkles, and those lines along the sides of the eyes called “Crows feet.” Now you can eliminate these lines and wrinkles without surgery and scars just by a few simple treatments with BOTOX®. A non-surgical breast lift can now be performed with BOTOX®.
How does it Work?
BOTOX® is a nerve impulse “blocker”. It binds to nerve endings and temporarily prevents the release of chemical transmitters that activate muscles. These chemical transmitters carry the “message” from the brain to distant nerve endings and cause a muscle to contract. If the message is blocked, the muscle does not move and relaxes. This results in the overlying skin wrinkles to also relax. BOTOX® usually takes full effect within one to two weeks. However, the nerve endings usually grow new connections to the muscles in about 4 to 6 months, and muscle movement and activity returns. Therefore, treatment must be repeated once or twice a year.
Is it Safe?
BOTOX® has been recognized by the American Academy of Neurology, The American Academy of
Otolaryngology, The American Academy of Opthalmology and The National Institutes of Health as a safe and effective treatment for various disorders of muscle contraction and spasms. In over ten years of clinical experience involving thousands of patients around the world, there have never been any reported cases of systemic toxicity resulting from accidental injection or overdose of BOTOX®.
